The Basics
You know New Jersey has the highest property taxes in the nation. The average tax is about $4400 per year in the rest of the country. In new Jersey, we pay an average $6600 . Thats 50% more than every one else!
In New Jersey, you may have heard, we also pay the highest NET federal income tax in the nation. We get back about 60 cent of every dollar we send to Washington. That is the 50th out of 50 states.
In Gloucester County we pay the 29th highest property taxes in the nation. Thats right. Read that again. There are only 21 counties in New Jersey, and we pay the 29th highest taxes in the nation. Did you know our county budget here, is almost a fifth of a BILLION dollars?
If you are not already pounding your fist on the desk, we are going to look at local taxes. Consider these numbers:

Cost per resident/year |
Franklin |

$11,000,000 |
$611 |
Gloucester |
68,000 |
$43,000,000 |
$632 |
Pitman |
10,000 |
$7,000,000 |
$700 |
Washington |
50,000 |
$38,000,000 |
$760 |
Monroe |
31,000 |
$33,000,000 |
$1,065 |
In Williamstown, on top of an expensive state and federal tax burden, we pay more in local property taxes than our neighbors. In fact, we pay from 40 to 75% more than these other local towns. The towns listed vary in size, and are all within about ten miles of Monroe Township.
Obviously, the numbers above have been rounded, but the point remains clear: IT IS REALLY EXPENSIVE TO LIVE HERE!
Next time: How we got here, where we’re going.
